With new technologies coming to market, payment models transitioning to reimbursement based on quality and outcomes, venues of care moving away from the hospital, and an ever-changing regulatory environment, the panel discussion is sure to offer you many new and valuable insights.  In addition to the moderator led session, participants will have the opportunity to ask their own questions of the panelists.  

Speaker Bios

Dr. David Friend – Managing Director, BDO
Dr. David Friend is the Chief Transformation Officer and Managing Director of BDO’s Center for Healthcare Excellence & Innovation. He has more than 35 years of global healthcare experience serving as a C-Suite Operating Executive, Board Director and Advisor to Academic Medical Centers, Employers, Payors, Hospitals, Physician Groups, REITS, Law Firms, and Post-Acute Care Organizations. He provides advice on mergers and acquisitions, strategy, clinical integration, physician engagement, and enhancing shareholder value.Prior to joining BDO, Dr. Friend was the Chief Clinical Officer of Golden Living, a $2.5 B post-acute healthcare provider.  Previously, he was the President and Chief Medical Officer of Aseracare Hospice and Homecare, a Managing Director in Healthcare at Alvarez & Marsal, and a Senior Partner, Board Member and Global Leader of the Healthcare practice at Towers Watson. Dr. Friend was also appointed by the Governor of the State of Connecticut to be a Founding Board Member of The University of Connecticut Health Center where served on the Board of the Teaching Hospital, Medical School and Dental School.Dr. Friendearned his medical degree from The University of Connecticut. He holds a BA from Brandeis University and an MBA from the Wharton School of Business.

Michael Gregory – CIO, Highland Capital Management 
Mr. Gregory is CIO and Global Head of Highland Alternative Investors at Highland Capital Management in addition to Managing Director and Head of Healthcare Credit and Healthcare Long/Short Equity investment strategies. In 2006, he founded Cummings Bay Healthcare Fund, a healthcare hedge fund that is currently in the seventh year of operations and became an affiliate of Highland in 2010. Mr. Gregory also worked as a Partner at Sands Point Capital Management LLC, managing a dedicated healthcare equity hedge fund. He holds an MBA from the Yale School of Management, having completed a highly specialized joint program in healthcare within the Yale Schools of Medicine, Management and Public Policy. He holds a BS in Economics from the University of Pennsylvania, Wharton School of Business. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine, lecturer at Yale University, and frequent guest on CNBC, Fox Business and Morningstar. He has been profiled in Barron’s, cited by the WSJ as a “Category King” in Healthcare and named by Institutional Investor as “Best Up and Comer” in 2011.

Dr. Mark C. Lester – Executive Vice President, Texas Health 
Dr. Lester is currently the Texas Health Executive Vice President and Southeast Zone Clinical Leader. Prior to that, he worked as Interim Chief Quality Officer for the Texas Health Resources system, and Vice President and Chief Quality Officer at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Dallas.  Dr. Lester also served as the Chief Medical Officer for St. Mary's of Michigan.  He practiced as a neurosurgeon at Lehigh Valley Hospital and Health Network in Allentown, PA., where he was Chief of Neurological Surgery and Vice Chair for Operations in the Department of Surgery.  Dr. Lester led development and continues to sponsor "Physical Lead!" - a leadership development program engaging independent and employed physicians across Texas Health Resources.  He led system-wide implementation of customized surgical checklists and teamwork training for THR's wholly owned hospital operating rooms.  He also led early THR efforts for physician directed population health.  Dr. Lester also serves on the Board of Directors of the American Association for Physical Leadership (AAPL).  A graduate of Cornell University, Dr. Lester earned his medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh and completed his residency in neurological surgery at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.  He received his master's degree in business administration from The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania.

Michael Stroup – SVP of Acquisitions, United Surgical Partners International (USPI) 
Mr. Stroup serves as USPI’s Senior Vice President of Acquisitions and has over eighteen years of health care experience in surgical center development, health care investment banking and management consulting. Before USPI, Mr. Stroup was an investment banker with RBC Capital Markets and JPMorgan in San Francisco and a management consultant with William M. Mercer's Healthcare Practice in Atlanta. Mr. Stroup’s health care experience includes acquiring and funding companies, establishing joint ventures with leading health systems, and implementing managed care strategies for employers and providers. Mr. Stroup has an MBA from Wharton and an undergraduate degree from University of Michigan.

Harry Lake – CEO, Koa Partners 
Harry Lake serves as the Chief Executive Officer at Koa Partners, a private real estate firm providing brokerage, acquisition, development and advisory services for office and healthcare real estate projects.  Prior to Koa, Mr. Lake was the CIO at the Neal Richards Group responsible for managing a $1B healthcare portfolio and prior to that served as the Principal in charge of the US real estate acquisition strategy for the Trammell Crow Company.  He holds an MBA from Harvard Business School and earned his BA as a triple Major at the University of Hawaii while honorably serving in the Army National Guard.  Mr. Lake serves on the American Red Cross of North Texas Board, ULI’s Redevelopment and Reuse Council, and was recently named to the Dallas Business Journal’s 2016 40 under 40 class.

Dr. Karen Meador (Panel Moderator) – Managing Director, BDO 
Dr. Karen Meador is a Managing Director in BDO Consulting’s Healthcare Advisory practice and a member of The BDO Center for Healthcare Excellence & Innovation.  She is experienced in creating and expanding innovative programs and services designed to transform clinical care, research and education in the ambulatory, emergency and inpatient settings. She has expertise in government health care programs, designing and implementing cost-saving and quality improvement initiatives for academic medical centers, community health centers including FQHCs, and provider groups participating in Medicaid waiver DSRIP programs. Dr. Meador also provides clinical and regulatory due diligence for M&A transactions and complex compliance and legal matters.  Prior to BDO, Dr. Meador was a Physician Executive at University of Texas Southwestern Medical School and Children’s Medical Center in Dallas.Shecurrently serves on the healthcare advisory boards at Rice University and UT Arlington, and she has previously served on boards at UT Health and the Wharton School.  She is a past president of the Wharton Club of DFW.  Dr. Meador earned her medical degree from The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. She holds a BA from Rice University and an MBA from the Wharton School of Business.
