Canadian & US Immigration Policy

The panel will include:

• The Honourable Marco Mendicino, Canadian Minister of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship, will discuss the Canadian immigration system and recent changes that have been made.

• Wharton Professor Exequiel Hernandez will explain the changes in US immigration policy and review the impact of immigrants on foreign expansion and performance of firms.

• Allison Pasique, head of Campus Recruitment for the Canada Pension Plan (CPP) Investment Board, will describe CPPIB's recruiting and the role immigration plays.

• Alexandra Hambrock, head of Canadian Recruiting for McKinsey & Company, will put Canadian recruiting in a global context.

The Honourable Marco Mendicino was first elected as the Member of Parliament for Eglinton—Lawrence in 2015.  Minister Mendicino is a proud resident of Toronto and a passionate advocate for his community. During his first term, he championed local investments in public transit and in affordable housing and supported youth-driven programs aimed at creating more employment opportunities and safe spaces.  Before entering politics, Minister Mendicino served as a federal prosecutor for nearly 10 years, helping to fight against organized crime and bring terrorists—including members of the “Toronto 18”—to justice. He also worked at the Law Society of Ontario, was elected President of the Association of Justice Counsel and taught trial advocacy as an Adjunct Professor at Osgoode Hall Law School.  The son of an immigrant family, Minister Mendicino has a long track record of community activism in Eglinton—Lawrence. He has sat on numerous boards, volunteering at John Wanless Public School, COSTI Immigrant Services, Toronto Symphony Volunteer Committee, North Toronto Soccer Club, and Heart & Stroke Canada.  Minister Mendicino lives in Toronto with his wife and children.

Exequiel (Zeke) Hernandez is the Max and Bernice Garchik Family Associate Professor at Wharton. He's an expert on global strategy and innovation. His research explores how immigrants affect investment and entrepreneurship, how global R&D networks influence innovation, and corporate strategy.  He was recently chosen by Poets & Quants as one of the Best 40 Under 40 business professors in the world and has won several teaching excellence awards at Wharton.  His research has been recognized with the emerging Scholar Award by the three major scholarly organizations in the field of management strategy, and his papers have won several major awards. Outside of work, he spends time with his wife and children and loves soccer, long novels, and movies.

Allison Pasique is a Senior Manager of Campus Recruitment at CPP Investments. In the first 4 years that Allison has been with CPPIB, she has successfully managed the sourcing and acquisition of Finance and Real Estate Investment talent for the Americas and Europe. For the last 2 years Allison has been leading Campus Recruitment, where she is responsible for managing a team to create and execute campus strategy globally. 

Alex Hambrock is the Head of Canadian Recruiting for McKinsey & Company.  She leads a team across Canada and works to bring the best talent into the firm. Prior to this role, she worked as an Associate in McKinsey’s Toronto office where she specialized in corporate strategy, organizational behaviour and change work in North America.  Prior to joining McKinsey, Alex was a Director at S&P Global Market intelligence where she worked with asset managers in both the U.S. and Canada to improve their asset allocation, risk measurement and investment research across various asset classes. Alex holds an Honours Business Administration and Master Business Administration from Ivey Business School at The University of Western Ontario.

 --- After the panel discussion, Immigration Consultant Maria Krajewska will be available to answer specific questions about immigration to Canada.

Maria Krajewska is on the Board of Directors of the Immigration Consultants of Canada Regulatory Council.  Fluent in English, French, and Polish, she provides services and representation to a diverse range of clients in all areas of immigration and refugee law.  Maria holds a Master of Laws from the University of Warsaw and a Postgraduate Diploma from the Institute Européen des Hautes Études Internationales in Nice, France.
